Bark Bird Meal (bird snack).

Bark Bird Meal.

Bark Bird Meal.

The second new recipe from For The Birds: Easy to Make Recipes for Your Feathered Friends that I tried this weekend.  The idea is to make a paste that you can press into tree bark/branches/etc. for your woodpecker (and other small friends!) to find and snack on.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup flour
  • 4 cups cormeal

Instructions:

  • Mix together all ingredients in a large bowl until it reaches the consistency of putty.
  • Outside, use your fingers or a spoon to press the mixture into the bark of trees and the corners of your birdfeeders.

Notes:

  • Very easy to make.  I substituted crunchy peanut butter for plain and I think it might have made the consistency a little drier than it should be.  Birds still loved it, was just tough to get it to stick to anything like it’s supposed to.
